I watched this in 1992 when it was shown on PBS’s “Masterpiece Theatre”, introduced each Sunday night by the gradual, sizable Alistair Cooke. The very mammoth Janet McTeer (all 6′ of her!) and Cathryn Harrison are respectable in their roles. Other stand-outs are David Haig and Diana Fairfax. At the time it was shown on American TV, there were at least 30 minutes sever from what the Brits saw in the BBC version. I am tickled to finally regain my hands on the unedited version of this extremely well-done carve of obscure history.

I first watched this series when it came out in remarkable anticipated weekly installments on Masterpiece Theater in 1992. My rapture lasted from Sunday to Sunday and having now the rotund serving at one sitting allows me to recapture minute nuances that had fallen into the abyss of forgetfulness (it was fourteen years ago!) The account of the Nicolsons and of Vita and Violet is the legend of a longing that exhilarates and crushes, as Janet McTeer’s face and actions vividly consume. Her longing for Violet, as compared to her factual longing for her husband, makes one contain that loving only one person is perhaps unnatural and unhealthy. Harold comes across as truly “male” in that he expects Vita to return to him even though he continues to pursue his same-sex relationships. One sometimes wonders if his treasure for her is truly deep or whether his awareness of social convention is stronger than Vita’s, as she continuously lives on the edges of her passions. Vita is striking as portrayed by Ms McTeer, both as a woman and disguised as a man. Violet is a striking beauty but comes off as more needy and less insightful. Mr. Trefusis is portrayed as a prig, lost in a vortex of passion that he cannot feel, powerful less comprehend. This is a most thoughtful and detailed “portrait” of relationships–male/female and female/female–without condescension or judgment. Contemplate it carefully and advance to your absorb conclusion to be sure: I suspect your thoughts about sexual relations will be profoundly shaken.

Fritz Lang’s METROPOLIS was very successful with both critics and audiences when it debuted in 1927 Berlin–but it was thereafter edited for distribution by Channing Pollock, who disliked it and removed broad chunks of the film and substantially altered the storyline. The resulting film was admired for its visual style, but it proved a valuable and box office disappointment. Neglected in the wake of sound, surviving prints of the film were left to corrode and decay–and when it began to approach the home market via VHS and DVD the results were very hit or miss; Blackhawk released a fairly credible version of the truncated film to home video, but for the most fraction the quality of these releases varied from barely mediocre to downright unwatchable.

Until now.

A enormous chunk of METROPOLIS–perhaps as mighty a quarter of more–has been forever lost, but this Kino Video DVD release offers the single best version of the film available. The previously slice footage that mild exists has been restored; gaps in the film have been bridged by the occasional exhaust of stills and explanatory title cards; the film itself has been painstakingly and digitally restored; and the soundtrack is the Gottfried Huppertz current created for the film’s 1927 Berlin debut. In seeing this version of METROPOLIS, I was struck by how very differently it reads from the previously available truncated version. The visual style and the chronicle itself are noteworthy more appealing and cohesive, and in the wake of this restoration it becomes impossible to snarl the film area as landmark of international cinema.

Freder Fredersen (Gustav Frohlich) is the son of Joh Fredersen (Alfred Able), who reigns over the mammoth city of Metropolis. Freder is surprised to look his lifestyle has been built on the unseen but backbreaking labor of an entire class of unseen workers who tend the machines that acquire the city run–and he descends to the subterranean levels of Metropolis in an worry to understand their lives… and, not incidentally, to net the mysterious but sparkling woman Maria (Brigitta Helm) who has inspired his interest in the workers’ predicament. But his father is concerned by both Freder’s interest and Maria’s activities among the workers, and he turns to scientist C.A. Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) for attend. Rotwang has created a robot, and he agrees to give it the likeness of Maria in order to undermine both Freder’s savor for the girl and her absorb activities. But Rotwang has a hidden agenda of his own: once the robot has been unleashed, he will spend her to ruin Metropolis and thereby proper revenge on Joh Fredersen for past transgressions against him.

In many respects the yarn is simplistic, but the film’s visual style and connotations are anything but. Deeply influenced by such art movements as Expressionism, Objectivism, Art Deco, and Bauhaus, the film is visually fascinating–not only in its scenic designs, but in director Lang’s noted skill at creating the remarkable crowd scenes that dominate the film and building the hump and tension of the film as it moves toward an intense climax. But while one can–and many do–admire the film purely at this level, there is quite a lot going on in terms of philosophical advise as well: while it offers few viable solutions, the film raises such issues as the relationship between capital and labor, the dwelling of religion in recent society, human reaction to overwhelming technology, and (perhaps most interestingly) the drift of government into a class-conscious corporate entity. And religious motifs abound in the film: a largely deserted cathedral; Moloch; the Tower of Babel; and crosses–intriguingly juxtaposed with a repeating motif of the pentagram-like designs associated with the robot. It is entertaining stuff.

There has been complaint that this restoration runs at erroneous accelerate and the performances are therefore unnecessarily jerky. I did not regain this to be the case. In clear instances the movement is deliberately jerky and mechanical–the workers are a case in point–but beyond this there is nothing for which the inequity between tranquil acting and recent acting techniques cannot myth. There has also been some complaint that the title cards should have been left in their recent German and translated via subtitle. There is a sure validity to this, but it seems a minor quibble; title cards were typically translated in the calm era itself. The DVD includes a number of extras, including unruffled photographs, biographies of the major figures interested in the film, and two engaging documentaries-one on the restoration process and one on the creation of the film itself. Both are interesting; the audio commentary track by film historian Enno Patalas, however, is mildly disappointing. But when all is said and done, it is the film that counts. And this restoration is a grand achievement, to say the least, a project which brings a vast landmark of world cinema support from the edge of the abyss. Indispensible; a must-own.

–GFT (Amazon Reviewer) –

This is the 139 dinky, tinted version, with the disjointed music, distributed by “JEF films” and labeled “Aikman Archive” in yellow on the box. The sound is dreadful and the video quality is awful. For agreeable video quality, fetch the version produced by Kino Video instead. although the Kino version has a dreadful sound track, at least the video quality is very suited. For top-notch sound, accept the Moroder version of Metropolis.

This review assumes that you have already seen Metropolis. For those unique with Metropolis, it is considered “the” first SciFi movie — the robot, the chilly visual effects of future cities, and a few angry scientist lab scenes. But it is only a astronomical movie IF you peep the upright version. Sadly, there are more then 6 versions of the film floating around —

Black/white, terrible music, tiring, playback

B/W, abominable music, speedily playback

tinted, unpleasant music, lifeless playback

tinted, gracious music, hastily playback

plus a few versions with unpleasant video quality (the DVD version is such a case) and other versions with missing scenes, a non-logical hump to the account line due to unpleasant editing, etc.

Unfortunately, the status with prints of Metropolis is a bit of a mess. Those looking for the tinted Girogio Moroder sound track should NOT pick up this tape.

Although the hurry time of this version of the movie is 139 minutes, it is actually missing scenes that are in the 90 limited Kino Video and Moroder versions of the tape. The reason is that this 139 puny tape is bustle at a SLOWER run than the Kino tape is. Also, the music is totally out of sync and unrelated to the action.

Unfortunately, Moroder’s copy is not available from anywhere. At $24.95, I’d hoped that the folks at Amazon.com had found a copy but this is not the case. Someone should pick up a pleasant copy of the Moroder tape, sell that, and burn all of the other versions. Although some people object to Moroder’s rock soundtrack, at least it follows the account line and is an ample sound track on its maintain.

I was fortunate enough to have seen Moroder’s copy the first time I saw Metropolis and I am very contented that I did.

To add further insult to injury, the CD of Moroder’s soundtrack is not the same as the music that appearred in the movie. The CD has some additional songs and is missing some others. So you can’t redub a video from the CD. So don’t glean the “Moroder CD” and question to remix your bear copy of the video.

OK, having provided all of the background info, there is the review:

139-minute B&W version published by JEF films. The hide says it is a “newly restored version”, but image quality is so awful that I would rather call it “newly destroyed version”. It has actually more missing scenes than both Kino’s and Moroder’s versions, but runs longer because of slower frame accelerate.

A disappointment after the superb two previous seasons, the final run of Babylon 5 found Claudia Christian departed and Ivanova replaced by Captain Elizabeth Lochley (Tracy Scoggins), who in a soap-opera twist turned out to be Sheridan’s first wife. Sheridan was promoted to President of the Interstellar Alliance and the action moved to a group of telepaths seeking sanctuary from the PSI-Corp on B5. Giving a prominent role to Patricia Tallman’s Lyta Alexander, a love story for her was woven with the leader of the telepaths, Byron (Robin Atkin Downs). Meanwhile the aftermath of the Shadow War was explored as the origin of human telepaths became clear in “Secrets of the Soul,” and the appearance of PSI-Corp’s Bester (Walter Koenig) brought the plight of the refugees to a powerful close in “A Tragedy of Telepaths” and “Phoenix Rising.”

This was immediately followed by a rare episode not written by J. Michael Straczynski. Much was expected of “Day of the Dead,” penned by Neil Gaiman, the British creator of DC’s landmark Sandman comic and graphic novel series. Yet despite a change of tone including a gust appearance by Penn & Teller as 23rd-century comedy favorites Rebo & Zooty, the story proved an incongruous side trip into an unexplained twilight zone of fantasy. As usual the season picked up toward the end, with a string of fine political episodes leading to “The Fall of Centauri Prime” and the haunting “Objects at Rest,” in which Sheridan and Delenn leave Babylon 5 for new quarters on Minbar.

The final episode, “Sleeping in Light,” was directed by J. Michael Straczynski and made an epilogu to the series. Set 20 years later, after all the sound and fury this quiet, elegiac tale is the apotheosis of the love story that proved the balance to the tragedy of the preceding darkness. A personal story resolved against a background of the epic, at once transcendent, deeply human, and profoundly optimistic, “Sleeping in Light” is as moving as any hour in the history of television drama and a thoroughly satisfying conclusion to one of the greatest series ever made. –Gary S. Dalkin

Review of Seven Samurai - 3 Disc Remastered Edition Online

See Seven Samurai – 3 Disc Remastered Edition Online Right Now!

Hailed as the greatest film in the history of Japanese cinema, Seven Samurai is director Akira Kurosawa’s undisputed masterpiece. Arguably the greatest of all jidai-gecki (or historical swordplay films), Kurosawa’s classic 1954 action drama has never been surpassed in terms of sheer power of emotion, kinetic energy, and dynamic character development. The story is set during the civil unrest of 16th-century Japan, as the cowering residents of a small farming village are seeking protection against seasonal attacks by a band of marauding bandits. Offering mere handfuls of rice as payment, they hire seven unemployed “ronin” (masterless samurai), including a boastful swordsman (Toshiro Mifune) who is actually a peasant farmer’s son, desperately seeking glory, acceptance, and revenge against those who destroyed his family. Led by the calmly strategic Kambei (Takashi Shimura, star of Kurosawa’s previous classic, Ikiru), the samurai form mutual bonds of honor and respect, but remain distant from the villagers, knowing that their assignment may prove to be fatal.

Kurosawa masterfully composed his shots to emphasize these group dynamics, and Seven Samurai is a textbook study of the director’s signature techniqus, including extensive use of telephoto lenses to compress action, delineate character relationships, and intensify motion. While the climactic battle against raiding thieves remains one of the most breathtaking sequnces ever filmed, Seven Samurai is most triumphant as a peerless example of character development, requiring all of its 2-hour, 37-minute running time to illuminate every essential detail of villagers and samurai alike, including an abundance of humor as Kambei’s defense plan unfolds. In terms of its overall impact, Seven Samurai spawned dozens of copycat films (notably the American Western remake The Magnificent Seven) and cannot be adequately summarized by even the most comprehensive synopsis; it must be seen to be fully appreciated, and the Criterion Collection’s 2006 DVD reissu is an essential addition to any definitive home-video library. –Jeff Shannon

On the DVDs
According to the accompanying booklet, “the picture has been slightly window-boxed (in correct original 1.33:1 aspect ratio) to ensure that the maximum image is visible on all monitors.” The two-disc format was necessary “to maintain optimal image quality throughout the compression process,” with dual-layered DVD-9’s encoded “at the highest possible bit rate for the quantity of material included.” The picture and sound quality are simply amazing compared to Criterion’s one-disc release from 1998. The all-new, fully restored high-definition digital transfer takes full advantage of HD’s clarity and crispness, resulting in picture detail far surpassing the previous DVD. This also applies to the soundtrack, presented in optional Dolby surround in addition to the remastered original mono track. The new transfer “was mastered in 2k resolution from a duplicate negative created with wetgate processing from the original fine-grain master positive” (the film’s original negative is no longer available), and “several different digital hardware and software solutions were utilized for flicker, instability, dirt, scratch, and grain management.”

The complete 207-minute film is accompanied by two full-length commentary tracks, including a new track combining the critical insights of film scholars David Desser, Joan Mellen, Stephen Price (author of The Warrior’s Camera: The Cinema of Akira Kurosawa), Tony Rayns, and the dean of Japanese film experts, Donald Richie (author of The Films of Akira Kurosawa). Each scholar is given approximately 40 minutes of film-time, and their commentaries represent a uniqu opportunity to appreciate Seven Samurai from distinct yet complementary critical perspectives. The commentary by Japanese film expert Michael Jeck (from Criterion’s original 1988 laserdisc release) remains useful as a thorough analysis of Seven Samurai, primarily in terms of visual composition.

The 50-minute “making of” documentary, from Japan’s 2002 Toho Masterworks TV series Akira Kurosawa: It Is Wonderful to Create emphasizes Kurosawa’s collaboration with co-screenwriters Shinobu Hashimoto and Hideo Oguni, including production footage, crewmember interviews, and a reverent visit to the rural inn where Seven Samurai was written over a six-week period of intense seclusion. The two-hour “My Life in Cinema” interview with Kurosawa was recorded in 1993, with fellow filmmaker Nagisa Oshima serving as a gentle admirer, colleagu, and well-informed historian of Kurosawa’s career. “Seven Samurai: Origins and Influnces” is a richly informative documentary that places Kurosawa’s classic in both historical and cinematic context, examining its place in the jidai-gecki (swordplay) genre, its accurate depiction of samurai codes and traditions, and its stature as the prototype for many films that followed. The lavishly illustrated 58-page booklet includes eight brief essays on various aspects of Seven Samurai, each written by noted film scholars or film directors (including Arthur Penn and Sidney Lumet). Also included is a reminiscence by the great actor Toshiro Mifune, excerpted from a conversation recorded in 1993. Taken as a whole, the remastered three-disc Seven Samurai ranks as one of the finest DVD sets ever released. –Jeff Shannon
